DMSO is non-toxic but some precautions are needed when using it. It may temporarily irritate and wrinkle skin if handled improperly. It is a potent carrier, carrying whatever is with it through the skin. This means you need to handle DMSO with care and clean hands, washing them thoroughly again after application.
Here are some general safety rules about handling DMSO:
- Do not use DMSO when pregnant or nursing.
- Avoid contact with eyes.
- If diluting DMSO use distilled water or very clean organic substances such as coconut oil or aloe vera. 50%-70% dilution is often suggested.
- Temporal skin irritation, redness, itching, wrinkling of the skin may occur if DMSO is insufficiently diluted but these kinds of irritations disappear quickly.
- Use chemical-free soap to wash application areas and hands before and after applying DMSO.
